The chapter opens with the prophet declaring God's judgment on the altar, prophesying that a future king named Josiah would desecrate it by burning the bones of the false priests upon it. This prophecy is accompanied by a miraculous sign: the altar splits apart and its ashes pour out, confirming the prophet's message. However, upon hearing the prophecy, King Jeroboam attempts to seize the man of God, but his hand becomes paralyzed when he stretches it out in anger. After the prophet entreats the Lord, Jeroboam's hand is restored, prompting the king to invite the prophet to his home for a meal and reward. The man of God refuses, citing God's command not to eat or drink in that place or return the way he came.
