Picture this moment: Samuel, a man filled with purpose, stands ready to choose a new leader for Israel. He's looking at Eliab, the oldest son of Jesse, and you can almost feel the tension. Samuel thinks, 'This must be the one! He looks like a king!' It’s a powerful moment of expectation and judgment. But here's the twist: God has something different in mind. This verse highlights our tendency to focus on appearances, reminding us that what we see isn't always what matters most.
This book is credited to Samuel himself, with contributions from others who recorded the events. Samuel was a prophet and judge, someone who had a front-row seat to Israel's history. He includes this detail about Eliab because it captures a critical lesson: even someone as respected as Samuel can be fooled by appearances. This gives us insight into Samuel's own journey and understanding of God's ways, which are often different from ours.
At this time, Israel was in a transitional phase, moving from tribal leadership to a monarchy. The people were struggling with their identity and leadership. It’s about 1,000 years before Jesus, in a culture where physical strength and looks were highly valued—think of a world where the strongest warrior was often seen as the best leader. Understanding this helps you see why everyone, including Samuel, would think Eliab was the obvious choice.
This verse matters for you today because it challenges how you view yourself and others. Are you ever tempted to judge based on what you see on the surface? This moment reminds you that there’s so much more beneath the surface—your true value and the true value of others comes from within. When life feels overwhelming or when you feel overlooked, remember that your heart, your character, and your intentions are what truly count.
This week, take a moment to reflect on how you view people around you. Try to connect with someone you might usually overlook. Ask yourself: ‘What’s their story? What do they care about?’ Also, set aside a few minutes to think about your own heart. Are there dreams or qualities within you that you might not be giving enough attention? Embrace your unique gifts and remind yourself that you have value beyond what the world sees.
Now, let’s zoom out a bit. Samuel is on a mission; he’s been sent by God to anoint the next king because the current king, Saul, has lost his way. As he arrives at Jesse’s house, the pressure is on! When he sees Eliab, Samuel’s instinct kicks in, and he’s ready to declare him the chosen one. But this moment is pivotal because it sets the stage for a surprising twist—God tells Samuel not to judge by looks. This moment reveals the theme of the chapter: God sees the heart, not just the outward appearance, and this revelation will change everything.
