Let’s back up a bit. This moment comes right after a catastrophic event: the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The two women, Lot's daughters, have just escaped a city that was utterly destroyed. They are in a new, unfamiliar world, feeling isolated and scared. Their father is devastated, and they worry about what will happen to their family name. This verse captures a turning point where they decide to take drastic action to ensure they aren’t left without descendants, which shows just how dire their situation has become. It’s a pivotal point that reveals the desperation and the lengths they’ll go to in the face of hopelessness.
