John's prologue presents the most exalted view of Jesus in Scripture - the eternal Word who was with God and was God, through whom all things were made. The chapter moves from cosmic perspective to personal encounter as John the Baptist testifies about Jesus, and Jesus calls His first disciples who recognize Him as Messiah, Son of God, and King of Israel.
