Imagine being in a crowd, surrounded by people who are excited to hear a charismatic leader speak. You’re pumped, feeling the energy. Then, out of nowhere, this leader says something so intense, so challenging, that it makes you stop in your tracks. You can almost hear the gasps of disbelief, and then the murmurs start. That's what’s happening here! The disciples are feeling overwhelmed. They’re grappling with a message that seems impossible to digest. It’s raw, it’s real, and you can feel their confusion and struggle in these words. They’re not just questioning; they’re wrestling with deep truths that hit hard. Can you relate? Sometimes, truth isn’t easy to swallow, and that’s exactly the moment captured here.
This book was written by John, one of Jesus’ closest friends and followers. He had a unique perspective because he was there for all the powerful moments, witnessing everything firsthand. John included this detail about the disciples’ reaction because he wanted to show that even those who were closest to Jesus sometimes found his teachings shocking and difficult. He wasn’t glossing over the hard parts; he was being real. John's goal was to share these experiences to help future generations understand the true nature of faith, including its challenges. It’s like he’s saying, 'Hey, it’s okay to struggle with this!'
This was happening in a time when the Jewish people were under Roman rule, facing oppression and hardship. Just like the disciples, it’s okay to sit with the hard stuff. It’s where the real learning happens!
To fully grasp this moment, we need to step back a bit. Earlier in this chapter, Jesus had been teaching about being the 'bread of life'—a metaphor that was both profound and perplexing.
