They’re investigating a city called Bethel, which used to be known as Luz. This moment is all about discovery and reclaiming a space that has significance—a fresh start in a new land! It’s exciting and a little tense; you can almost feel the anticipation in the air as they prepare to take their next steps.
The book of Judges is traditionally attributed to Samuel, a key figure in Israel’s history. He included this detail to highlight the ongoing struggle and progress of the Israelites as they settle into their land. Samuel wanted to show how critical these moments of exploration and decision-making were for the identity and survival of the people. It’s a reflection of his desire for the Israelites to remember their roots and their journey, as well as the importance of taking action in faith.
When this was written, the Israelites were in a tumultuous period after settling into the Promised Land.
