Imagine a young guy standing there, feeling totally overwhelmed and unsure. He’s talking to God and saying, 'How can I possibly be the one to save my people?' You can feel his anxiety, right? He’s from a family that doesn’t have much power, and he sees himself as the least important person in his whole household. This moment is raw and real; it’s about doubt and feeling small in a big world. You can almost hear his heart pounding as he questions his worth and ability. It’s a powerful reminder that even the most unlikely people can be called to do great things.
This book, Judges, was written to show the ups and downs of Israel’s history and the leaders who rose to the occasion. The author, often thought to be Samuel, included this detail to highlight Gideon's vulnerability. Samuel wanted to show that God doesn’t choose the strongest or the most confident people; He picks those who feel inadequate and guides them to their purpose. It’s like the author is saying, 'Look, even the underdogs have a role to play in God’s plan!'
This was all happening in a time when Israel was kind of like the underdog of the ancient world, constantly facing threats from powerful enemies. The culture was filled with fear, uncertainty, and a longing for a hero. People were looking for someone to rise up and lead them out of trouble. It’s a powerful reminder that your feelings of inadequacy don’t disqualify you. Instead, they can be the starting point for something amazing. You have potential within you, even if you don’t see it right now. This verse encourages you to embrace your doubts and realize they can be part of your journey to impact the world around you.
This week, take a moment to think about something you feel unqualified to do—maybe it’s helping a friend, volunteering, or even pursuing a dream. Write it down! Then, challenge yourself to take one small step towards that thing, even if it feels scary. Remember, Gideon didn’t start out strong; he started with doubt. You can embrace that too and take steps forward, trusting that you’re capable of more than you think!
Now, let’s step back and see how this fits into the bigger story. Before this moment, Israel is in a tough spot. They're being oppressed by the Midianites, and life is pretty bleak. God decides it’s time for a change and sends an angel to Gideon, who’s just a regular guy hiding away, trying to survive. When Gideon hears he’s chosen to lead the fight, he’s shocked and terrified.
