This book was written by Luke, a doctor and a keen observer of the world around him. He wasn’t one of the original twelve disciples but was a close companion of Paul. Now, let’s zoom out a bit. Before this verse, Jesus has been engaging with a rich young ruler who’s grappling with the idea of leaving behind his wealth to follow Him. It’s a tense moment where the disciples are realizing how difficult it is for someone deeply tied to their possessions to enter the new life Jesus offers. After the young man walks away saddened, the disciples are left astonished, wondering who could ever be saved if even this seemingly ‘perfect’ guy can’t do it. This is where Jesus drops the truth bomb: what seems impossible for humans—like changing hearts and lives—is totally doable for God. It shifts the whole conversation from despair to hope, showing that God’s capabilities are beyond our understanding.
