Imagine standing on a hill, your eyes wide open, witnessing something so incredible that you can't help but shout out in awe. This moment captures the excitement of seeing the greatness of the Lord, not just in your own backyard but beyond the borders of where you normally see Him. It’s an invitation to recognize that God's presence and power extend far and wide, beyond what you might expect. Picture the joy of realizing that everything you thought was contained is actually much bigger. It’s about experiencing and proclaiming that greatness with excitement and pride!
Malachi, a prophet, wrote this book during a time when the people of Israel had returned from exile but were struggling with apathy and discontent. He wanted to shake them awake! By including this specific detail about seeing God's greatness, Malachi was highlighting a key point: it's not enough to just go through the motions; you need to truly see and celebrate who God is. His perspective was that God’s greatness should inspire awe and gratitude, and he wanted to remind the Israelites of that beautifully transformative truth.
This was written in a post-exilic period, around the 5th century BC, when the Israelites were back in their homeland but feeling lost and disconnected. They were rebuilding their lives and their community, yet many were stuck in a cycle of routine and indifference. Understanding this context helps you see why Malachi’s words were so vital. He was speaking to people who needed a fresh spark of hope and a reminder that God’s presence wasn’t just local but global. It was a significant time of transition and rebuilding.

To really grasp this moment, let’s zoom out a little. In the surrounding verses, God is addressing His people, calling them out for their lack of respect and love toward Him. They’ve been going through the motions, offering half-hearted sacrifices and losing sight of who He truly is. But then, here comes this pivotal moment! This verse serves as a reminder that despite their shortcomings, God is still great and His greatness is visible to those who choose to see it.
