This book was written by Matthew, one of Jesus' disciples. He was there to witness all the incredible events and teachings firsthand. Matthew wanted to share the story of Jesus in a way that would resonate with his fellow Jews, showing how Jesus fulfilled the expectations of the Messiah. By including this detail about John, Matthew emphasizes how even the most devoted can face criticism when they follow their calling, inviting readers to consider their own responses to those who seem different.
Matthew wrote this during a time when the Jewish people were grappling with their identity under Roman occupation. There was a lot of expectation about a coming Messiah who would rescue them. This tension in society made John's radical lifestyle even more provocative. People were looking for a savior, and here was John, living in the wilderness, eating locusts and wild honey.
