Imagine a treasure map, one that doesn’t lead to jewels or gold, but to what really matters to you. This verse is a powerful reminder that whatever you value most—your time, energy, or passions—your heart will follow. If you treasure kindness, your heart will be full of compassion. If you chase after wealth, your heart will be consumed by what you can acquire. It’s all about where you put your focus. Your heart is like a compass, pointing you toward your true treasure. So, take a moment to think: what do you really treasure?
This book was written by Matthew, one of Jesus’s disciples. He was a tax collector before following Jesus, which gives him a unique perspective on wealth and priorities. He understood the pull of money and the emptiness it can create if it's your main focus. By emphasizing this verse, Matthew is sharing a lesson he learned firsthand: that true fulfillment comes when you align your heart with what truly matters, rather than chasing after fleeting things.
This was all happening in the first century in a world where wealth was often seen as a blessing. People were caught up in materialism, just like today. The Roman Empire was thriving, and many were focused on status and possessions. Jesus’s words were revolutionary, challenging cultural norms and inviting people to think differently about what they value. Picture crowds gathered around Jesus, listening intently as he turned their understanding of success upside down.

This week, try to identify what you treasure most. Is it your time spent with family? Your passions? Make a plan to invest in those areas. For example, if you value friendship, reach out to a friend you haven’t talked to in a while and spend some quality time together. If you care about community, volunteer for a local charity. The key is to take small, intentional steps that reflect your true treasures, allowing your heart to follow.
