Imagine a stage filled with dazzling lights and performers who seem to have all the answers. This book was written by Matthew, one of Jesus’ close followers. He was there to witness so much of what Jesus did and said. Matthew wanted to share the truth about Jesus with everyone, especially those who might be tempted to stray. His unique perspective as a former tax collector gives him insight into how people can be misled by appearances and authority. He includes this warning because he cares about helping others avoid deception and find the real truth in Jesus’ teachings.
Matthew was writing in a time when the early church was just starting to grow, but it faced a lot of challenges. People were confused, and many false teachers were popping up, claiming to speak for God. This was around the first century, a time of upheaval and change. The Roman Empire was powerful, and many were searching for truth amidst chaos. Understanding this backdrop helps you see why this warning is so crucial—people needed to be on their toes, discerning what was genuinely from God versus what was just flashy distractions.
