Imagine being Joseph, a man who deeply cares about others. He finds out that his fiancée, Mary, is pregnant and his heart must have dropped. Instead of reacting with anger or public disgrace, he decides to handle it quietly. This shows not just his kindness but his inner struggle; he’s torn between what feels right and what society expects. It’s a moment packed with emotion, compassion, and the weight of a tough decision. You can almost feel the tension in the air as he thinks about what to do next.
This book was written by Matthew, one of Jesus’ disciples, who wanted to share the story of Jesus in a way that highlighted how he fulfilled ancient prophecies. Matthew includes this detail about Joseph to show us the heart behind the man who would raise Jesus. He wants us to see that even in challenging situations, there’s room for compassion and understanding. Now, let’s zoom out a bit. This verse is part of a larger story. Just before this, Mary has had the incredible, mind-blowing experience of being told she will have a child, despite being a virgin. That’s huge! Joseph, who loves her, is blindsided by this news. He’s wrestling with his feelings—hurt, confused, maybe even betrayed. After this verse, an angel appears to him in a dream, reassuring him to take Mary as his wife. This moment of decision sets the stage for the miraculous birth of Jesus. Joseph’s choice isn’t just personal; it’s pivotal for the entire story of hope and redemption that follows.
